Later on…on a brisk Saturday evening in the
City of "Brotherly Love," two teams from
the Labelle Community Football League’s Eastern
Division staged a great playoff battle
on the gridiron. The Philadelphia Panthers (8-0
LCFL) took on the Boston Ravens (3-5, LCFL) for
the third season. The Panthers completed the three-peat,
defeating their heated rival for the third time.
Neither offense could get into rhythm during the
first half, thanks to outstanding performances by
both defensive units. The Panthers were able to
grind out a 22-13 victory. During the second quarter,
DB Drew Gardner woke the team and Panthers fan up
with a beautiful down the sideline, interception
return over 90 yards for a touchdown. Despite giving
up two TD passes on a flea flicker and dump off
pass to the Ravens 300 pound TE, the Panthers “D”
roared back; responding with constant pressure from
the front four of Gary Dunlap, Marquis Slocum, Steve
Coleman and Leroy Landon. LBs Jose Matos and Tomar
Bivens flattened the Ravens wings with some vicious
hits during the second half; causing three turnovers
and recording two sacks. On offense, the Panthers
backfield of Dennis Goslee, Sean Mayers, Cory Sutton
and Arnold Malloy contributed over 180 yards rushing;
80 and a TD yards from Goslee up the middle, punishing
runs. Mayers scored on a run over 15 yards on the
left side and Sutton scored on a 2pt conversion.
O-lineman Rob Marks, Bryant Whitney and Andrew Hague
keyed the Panthers rushing attack with their astounding
blocking. Special Teams and all purpose threats
Micah Mobley and Chris Poindexter contributed over
100 yards in rushing, receiving and special team
return yards. Despite the humbling conditions @
Simons Recreation Center, the Panthers “prowled”
through their adversity and preyed on the Ravens
to the game ended.
